Harvard Business School's "Summer Venture in Management" Program
The Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) hosted by Harvard Business School http://www.hbs.edu/mba/svmp/ is a week of HBS instruction (June 20-26, 2009) that exposes high-potential college students in the summer between their junior and senior year to the HBS MBA experience and the variety of opportunities a degree in management can afford.
This twenty-year HBS tradition demonstrates the many rewards of an MBA degree to students who may not otherwise have considered this path. Participants spend a week on campus living the MBA student experience – attending classes, analyzing case studies, and debating management issues with peers and faculty.
This unique educational experience, in combination with a summer internship at a sponsoring company or organization, gives participants a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the innumerable opportunities that exist in management, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through leadership.
Participants will be selected based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and personal characteristics. Consistent with the objective of promoting educational diversity and opportunity in business leadership, additional criteria to be considered among others, are whether the applicant is:
- the first family member to attend college;
- a member of a group that is currently underrepresented in business schools and corporate America (e.g. African-American, Latino, Native American, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender);
- from a family with little business education or experience; and/or
- from a school whose graduates do not typically attend a top-tier university ( e.g., attends a rural or predominantly minority college, or has attended a community college as part of a four-year degree).
The Application Deadline: May 11, 2009

Jumping Right In To Law School: Not So Fast!
By Gabriel J. Rosenberg, Director of Admissions, UConn School of Law
I have a confession to make: I never watch “lawyer” television. When I was in college, a lot of
my friends were watching L.A. Law, which, if mentioned these days, confirms one’s age (old!)
and out‐of‐touchness. One of the big TV shows now – and in order to finish this sentence, I
had to do some research – is Law and Order, and there are about three or four versions of
the show. I haven’t watched any of them. A few months ago, I borrowed a DVD of the first
season of Boston Legal, but I turned it off after a few minutes because the lawyers (actors)
were too attractive. They were unbelievably attractive, really. This is not a knock on real
lawyers, but it was hard to concentrate on the plot when I kept thinking “this lawyer is just
too hot!”

Campus Wellness
By Jessica Dauz, RD, Nutrition Graduate Assistant & Amy Pumerantz, MA, RD, Nutrition Coordinator/Health Educator, Department of Wellness and Prevention Services, Student Health Services
Wherever you are on campus, the smell or sight of food can be enticing. The fragrant aroma from the student union or the beautifully prepared sandwiches/wraps from the numerous cafes are just some of the places that will excite your senses. The amount and availability of food can be overwhelming. A hectic schedule compiled with stress can prevent us from taking a step back to think about our daily food choices. If you feel you can relate, it may be important to ask yourself a few questions next time you are faced with a meal decision.

Boundaries
By Priscilla Cale, Director, UConn School of Business Family Business Program
Back when I was in college, the word “borders” was used to describe lines that went around the edge of a paper. Borders were dotted or dashed, selected to be thick or thin, and were generally shadowed or 3D. Borders were used to be divisive – to keep what you wanted in, and leave what you didn’t want out. They confined. They limited.
But borders now are changing and they’re ever more difficult to identify. Borders now adjoin. They demonstrate commonality and are shared. They represent the brink, the outer limits, or the edge of civilization. Christopher Columbus thought the world had a border and was flat. We now know better. The globe has no borders – only the ones we’ve chosen to carve out ourselves.
