6th Annual Awards Banquet

 The Center for Real Estate's Annual Awards Banquet was held Tuesday, April 1, 2008 with approximately 220 guests in attendance. The evening opened with Katherine Pancak, Professor in Residence, welcoming students and guests. The Keynote speaker was Bill Farley, President of CB Richard Ellis, who also received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The awards were presented by Katherine Pancak and C.F. Sirmans.

The banquet could not have been a success without the support of our students, family, alumni, friends, and industry partners. Thank you to all who have supported us over the past year and who were able to attend the banuqet.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award honors real estate professionals who have made sustained and meritorious contributions throughout their careers to the UConn Real Estate Program and the real estate profession. The 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award was given to William H. Farley.

Bill has been involved in the Hartford real estate market since 1961. His leasing activity, both project and tenant driven, has given him first hand knowledge of virtually every building throughout Greater Hartford. Bill is generally acknowledged as the premier forecaster for Greater Hartford real estate trends. Bill is a member of a Brokerage Team that includes First Vice President Bob Botters, Vice President Thomas York and Associate Alyson Ideman. As an active Asset Manager, Bill has his finger on the pulse of the real estate markets on a daily basis. He brings a historical market perspective, in-depth negotiating experience and a widely recognizaed capactiy for creative solutions to any solution.

Bill's professional and charity affiliations include: Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA); Founder & Past President, Greater Hartford Board of Realtors; Past Member of Board of Directors, American Society of Real Estate Counselors (CRE); Former Chairman (CT), House of Bread; Past Chair, Hartford Prayer Breakfast; Chair, Hartford Seminary; Past Chair, Greater Hartford YMCA; Board of Trustees, Order of Franciscans Minor; Affiliate, Mayors Commission to Eliminate Homelessness; Chair.

For over 40 years, Bill has been active in the Greater Hartford commercial real estate market. He knows the owners, the tenants, and the stories. Bill has consummated transactions in virtually every office building in downtown Hartford along with a plethora of suburban properties. A graduate of Holy Cross College, Bill has earned an MBA at UConn and a Masters Degree in Religious Studies from the Hartford Seminary. Bill is the founder of the Greater Hartford Multi Faith Prayer Breakfast and with his wife, Ruth, are parents of 8 children with 16 grandchildren. New Page 1

Distinguished Alumni of the Year


This award honors University of Connecticut real estate alumni who have provided distinguished service to the UConn Real Estate Program and the real estate profession. The 2008 Distinguished Alumni of the Year award was given to Patrick J. Wellspeak.

Patrick Wellspeak is a partner in the firm Wellspeak, Dugas & Kane, LLC. Mr. Wellspeak focuses on valuation of multi-million dollar commercial properties with an emphasis on litigation support and counseling. His clients include a variety of financial institutions and law firms as well as international corporations such as General Reinsurance, Pfizer, Inc., Gartner Group, The Hartford Insurance Group and MassMutual. He is a 1985 graduate of the University of Connecticut and lives in Chesire with his wife Ann and sons Andrew and Thomas.
Individual Partner of the Year

 This award honors reale state professionals who have provided distinguished service to the UConn Real Estate Program and/or the real estate profession. The 2008 Individual Partner of the Year Award was given to Bruce Cagenello.

Bruce Cagenello, a 1960 Graduate of the University of Connecticut, has been a Real Estate Broker since 1970. He has served approximately 15 years on the Real Estate Commission, 9 years as Chairman. He was appointed by 3 Governors and has served 5 Commissioners of Department of Consumer Protection. Upon his retirement from this volunteer position, Governor Rell proclaimed May 2, 2007, Bruce Cagenello Day. In 2003, he received Secretary of the State Public Service Award, was active in the Connecticut Association of Realtors and Greater Hartford Association of Realtors and he has been Commercial Broker of the Year, and Realtor of the Year. Bruce has earned the CCIM, CRB, CRS, and GRI professional designations and is presently a Shriner, a member of Professional Standards Committee, an approved Expert Court Witness, Subject Matter Expert for two ARELLO pre licensing testing companies, and a consistent annual recipient of a Prudential Connecticut commercial real estate production award. He and his wife Dody live in Simsbury. They have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Early Career Graduate Alumni of the Year

 This award honors University of Connecticut real estate alumni in the early state of their career who have provided service to the UConn Real Estate Program and the real estate profession. The 2008 Early Career Alumni of the Year Awards were given to Katherine E. Giordano and Andrew M. Sabatini.



Kate Giordano joined ING Clarion Partners in May 2005 after completing her MBA in Storrs. She is a Vice President, supporting Clarion Development Ventures' acquisition and asset management activities. Kate joined CDV from ING Clarion Research and Strategy, where she served as interim head of U.S. Market Research. Prior to her MBA, Kate was employed by Howard/Stein-Hudson Associates, in Glastonbury, CT. She was Deputy Program Manager of public information on the New Haven I-95/Q-Bridge reconstruction program. She received her B.A. from Northwestern University in 1998.






 Andrew Sabatini joined Prudential Investment Management in February 2007. He is a Manager, supporting Prudential Real Estate Investors' ("PREI") global real estate funds. Andrew works closely with the domestic and itnernational portfolios to monitor the funds values, assess areas of investment risk, and develop valuation policies. Andrew graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Finance/Real Estate. While living in Connecticut, Andrew worked for a Real Estate Developer assisting in acquitions, approvals, and site development. After graduation, Andrew joined the Real Estate Business Advisory Services group at PricewaterhouseCoopers. At PwC, he was engaged in reale state consulting, valuation, research, and underwriting. He now lives in Parsippany, NJ and is getting married in May.
Organizational Partner of the Year


This award honors real estate professional organizations that have provided distinguished service to the UConn Real Estate Program. The 2008 Organizational Partner of the Year was given to Connecticut Association of REALTORS, Inc. Ken DelVecchio, President, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

Connecticut Association of REALTORS, Inc. (CAR) is Connecticut's largest professional trade association representing over 19,000 real estate professionals engaged in all aspects of the real estate business. Founded in 1920, the Connecticut Association of REALTORS, Inc. is dedicated to enhancing the ability of its members to conduct their business successfully while maintaining the preservation of private property rights. Use of the term "REALTOR" is exclusive to the members of the REALTOR Association and signifies their allegiance to a strict code of ethics.
Industry Partner of the Year Award

 This award honors real estate companies that have provided distinguished service to the UConn Real Estate Program. The 2008 Industry Partner of the Year award was given to The Hartford Investment Management Company. John M. Maher, Senior Vice President, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

The Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO) has $140 billion in assets under management with 143 investment professionals, including 45 Portfolio Managers averaging 18 years of investment experience and 54 Research Analysts avaeraging 12 years of investment experience. HIMCO's sole business is asset management; and is able to focus on a clearly defined mission- understanding client's needs and responding by providing a range of long-term investment solutions. Their investment philosophy is unconstrainted, flexible and opportunistic in its implementation and they foster debate and challenge conventional thinking: compelling thoughts and ideas are pooled to generate a continuous flow of investment analysis and insights.

The 3rd Annual UCRECC Golf Tournament Winning Team of Tim Breda, Daniel Katz, and Eric Michel were presented with their trophies at the annual banquet.

Student of the Year Award

 The 2008 Graduate Student of the Year was awarded to Lindsay A. Castonguay. Lindsay is a second year MBA student at the University of Connecticut concentrating in Finance and Real Estate. Prior to entering the MBA program, Lindsay worked for Bingham McCutchen LLP as a marketing coordinator in Boston, MA and Hartford, CT. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Suffolk University in Boston, MA with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications. As C.F. Sirmans' graduate assistant, Lindsay has enjoyed working on meaningful Real Estate related projects. Lindsay is also a manager of UConn's Student Managed Fund, where she researches, analyzes and recommends securities for a protion of the UConn Foundation Fund. This past summer, Lindsay interned at Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers in the securities group, working on various projects focusing on real estate investment trusts.

 The 2008 Undergraduate Student of the Year was awarded to Katherine A. Tunsky. Katherine is currently a senior undergraduate and is majoring in Real Estate & Urban Economic Studies. President of the Real Estate Society, Katherine is actively involved with the Real Estate Center and is a Teaching Assistant for the Real Estate Investments class taught by Professor C.F. Sirmans. During the spring of 2007, Katherine was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for business students and has received several scholarships for her academic achievements. Through the summer and fall, Katherine completed a 7 month internship with CBRE|Melody- a provider of mortgage banking services for the commercial real estate industry. By working with the skilled professionals at CBRE|Melody, Katherine was exposed to all aspects of the commercial real estate market.

Both students were honored for having demonstrated a commitment to the real estate program through their internships, work with the Center, participation in Center events and academic excellence.
Byrl N. Boyce Valuation Scholarship


This award is given in honor of Byrl N. Boyce and is awarded to students who are interested in pursuing a career in real estate valuation. Criteria include demonstration of potential for future academic and professional accomplishments.

The 2008 Bryl N. Boyce Valuation scholarship recipients are:

Angela V. Billis, Ryan W. Callas, Brett W. Eagleson, Charles B. Gill, Rebecca L. Hannon, Christopher B. Parks, Aija Pilvere, Amber S. Robida, and Kevin P. Scully.
